ERC Proof of Concept Grant for virtual communication tool

Andrea Evers, professor of Health Psychology, has received a Proof of Concept Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). This additional grant is awarded to previous ERC grant recipients and can be used to further explore the potential impact of scientific research for new innovations, in order to bring relevant scientific research closer to the market. She works on this together with her research team and colleagues Kaya Peerdeman, Stefanie Meeuwis and Liesbeth van Vliet.

With the grant, the research team will develop a virtual reality training tool to train communication skills in healthcare professionals in order to optimize treatment effects. The purpose of the communication tool is to better tailor the treatment to the expectations of patients and consequently optimize the treatment. Previous research by the research group into placebo mechanisms shows that positive expectations of a treatment (placebos) have a positive effect on the actual outcome of a treatment. With the development of this innovative tool, Andrea Evers and her research team hope to make the knowledge accessible to healthcare professionals and to optimize treatment effects.
